Experimental path-following of equilibria using Newton’s method. Part II: Applications and outlook

In Part I of this paper, a quasi-static experimental path-following method was developed that uses tangent quantities in feedback controller, based on Newton’s method. The ability to compute an stiffness opens the door more advanced techniques. Here, we extend to: (i) pinpointing critical points (limit and branching points); (ii) branch switching alternate equilibrium paths; (iii) tracing with respect secondary parameter. We initially explore these concepts via virtual testing environment introduced validated I. Ultimately, objective is demonstrate novel procedures protocols made possible by methods. particular, three pertinent examples are discussed: design sensitivity plots for shape-adaptive morphing structures; validation nonlinear FE benchmark models; non-destructive subcritical (unstable) buckling thin-walled shells.
